I’ve realized that aging – getting better – with style and grace is not simple by any means. But it can be done well, and it can be fun. Even exciting! I’ve certainly acquired some wisdom along the way. I’ve tried a lot of things that don’t work. I’ve kept the things that do, and I’ll share my guidelines below.
Radiant beauty is the fusion of inner and outer beauty. Beauty is confidence. Beauty is being at ease with who you are. Beauty is accomplishment. Beauty is energetic. Beauty is joy! Beauty is patience, compassion, and dedication.
I’ll be the first to admit it’s a real balancing act and takes focused effort. Maybe you can relate. Your body has changed. Your taste has changed. Fashion suddenly seems like it’s focused on younger women. While we were living our lives developing fierce inner strength and patience as mothers, career women, and even caretakers for aging parents – our bodies have changed in ways that seem out of sync with the lens through which the outside world views our beauty. We still want to turn heads – but for the right reasons.
The key is getting the outside to match the bold, strong woman you’ve become. Then you can truly radiate that true inner beauty one can only earn – never buy.
#1: Have your clothes tailored to fit
This is a game-changer, Do it and never look back.
#2: Wear more tonal colors
Tonal dressing: Wearing different pieces together that fall within the same color family.
#3: Understated is better than overstated
Don’t eclipse your radiance – compliment it.
#4: Sleep 8 hours a night
This will make you truly beautiful.
#5: Have a strong friend group
Invest time in seeing them often.
#6: Eat well
Cook at home. Always take time to truly savor what you eat.
#7: Cultivate a creative passion
It’s never too late. Nourish your spirit with something that makes you come alive.
#8: Exercise every day
Make it a habit no matter what, even if it’s a brisk walk around your neighborhood.
#9: Spend time outside every day
20 minutes of sun on our skin is the best beauty secret ever.
#10: Perfection is for the heavens, not for us
Never take yourself too seriously!
Soft and airy. If you run warm or for warmer climates. Ultra comfy and a great
French Terry is a great mid-weight.
Not bulky, just the right amount of warmth.
My warmest robe for colder months or women who run cold, like me.
Currently not every pattern comes in every style or weight. My goal is to eventually be able to offer every pattern in every style and weight but I’m not there yet. For now I think of each pattern as being special to a particular style due to what the pattern is and how it feels to me.
Scarf : Probably the easiest of all. Fold the chain in half, so that both strands are running parallel to one another. Hold one end of the doubled necklace in each hand, then wrap the folded necklace around your neck. Pull the ends of the lariat to be in front. In the other hand, the doubled chain has created a loop. Pass the ends of the lariat through the loop. Feed them all the way through and allow the ends to hang down. Just like we do with a scarf!
Choker : This can be a very dramatic look. Take one end of the lariat in your hand and place it right below your collarbone. Then wrap the rest of the lariat around your neck once (or twice, if your lariat is a lengthy one). Loop one of the strands over in the front. This will secure the lariat in place.
Simple knot : If you want to do something a little different with your lariat, try a front knot. The result can look very classic. Put the lariat around your neck, so that both ends drape over your shoulders and onto your chest. Grab both ends of the chain in one hand. Create a loop with both strands, then pull the ends of the lariat through the loop. This will tie a knot in the front. Again, when starting you can begin with ends even or uneven both look fabulous.
Simple wrap Grab an end in each hand, then place the center part at the back of your neck. Cross one piece over to the opposite side and wrap it around the back of your neck. Pull the end over your shoulder and allow it to hang there. Do the same thing with the other piece. You can leave it like this, or you can loop one strand over the other to secure it.
Basic loop: This is the easiest way to style a lariat. Drape the necklace around your neck, with the center part at the back of your neck. One end will hang over each shoulder. The ends can be even or uneven depending on what look you prefer, I like uneven. Grab an end in each hand and cross the chain in front of you. Loop one end under and then through, exactly the same way you would begin to tie your shoelaces. Let the two ends hang down. You can adjust the loop higher or lower, depending on what kind of effect you want to achieve.
Price does not always reflect true value. When it comes to jewelry, this is especially true.
Did you know what a great value your necklace was when you bought it? Of course you did, you’re sharp. Most customers have no idea. That’s been a tricky problem for me – though it’s very good for you. Let me explain.
When I first started my business, most of my clients were friends. I sold my necklaces with as little markup as I could, out of courtesy. As my business began growing and I started selling online, my friends’ prices became everyone’s price. And that became an issue – because new customers weren’t sure if my cabochon stones were real!
“Raise your prices,” everyone said. “You’ll make more, and customers won’t be confused.”
Simple? Sure. But simply not possible. I refused to raise prices to prove my jewelry is real, and I have never wavered from my approach. Selecting each cabochon stone, bead, and unique accent by hand – and buying directly from vendors I’ve known for years – is how I can offer such reasonable prices. Add hand knotting, and you have a superlative value.
Here’s exactly how I do it.
Color, shape and texture are the three most important elements I look for when I buy stones or beads. Years of training my eye to recognize exceptional value pays off when I get to hold each and every piece – imagining its new home on a necklace you’ll love.
Being a New York native serves me well when negotiating prices: I stand my ground, and have no problem walking away if I think the price is unfairly high. Now, when vendors I trust get a certain stone, they call me directly – and my cost reflects the business relationship we’ve cultivated over the years.
The most challenging aspect is getting the knot snug up against the bead, but it’s worth the focus – the beads will drape much better. It’s a subtle commitment to quality and elegance that shines through, every time you wear it.

]]>I have been on the hunt for a lightweight, stylish bag I could also wear cross body or even as a backpack. When I am out of the house working I want my bag to disappear so I can use my hands freely. My solution came into being 7k miles away from my San Francisco home in a workshop in Manila Philippines.
The bag needed to be lightweight, comfortable, sturdy, and stylish. Above all it needed to be capable of being used as a bag, crossbody, and a backpack. I did not want a leather bag as they can be heavy and lose shape over the years.
What unfolded was truly a stroke of good fortune. The family who runs the workshop making the bags has been in business for 100 years. They have made bags for all of Manila’s elite and most stylish women. The matriarch and her daughter invited us to visit their workshop the following day (I would attend via video).
I wasn't prepared for the scene I witnessed over my phone. As my husband toured the workshop I saw bag after beautiful bag being handmade one weave at a time. All shapes and styles you can imagine were coming to life right before my eyes. The workers at the shop had been with the family themselves for generations, many living on the campus of the workshop. They seemed very engaged, happy and skilled.
Would they work with me to design the perfect bag? They would. Rita, the daughter of company head, would work with us directly to translate my designs into a woven reality. Many hours on WhatsApp and multiple samples were created over the next nine months to get it to perfect.

My Freehand bag is light and strong. It can be carried as a tote, worn cross body or as a backpack (my favorite). For me it's the perfect bag for everyday or even better for travel (when that resumes).
I hope you love them.

The year is 1980, it’s November in Manhattan. I’m in town from boarding school for the weekend staying at my parents pied a terre, alone….. It’s Saturday night!
The plan is to meet up with friends at Trader Vic’s then head to the disco Xenon for dancing. I need to look as sophisticated as I can to get in and get served. I plan to wear heals, pearl earrings and my mother’s cashmere cape from Scotland.
The cape is critical to getting passed the velvet rope into the club. It should make me look more sophisticated than I really am (at 16!). The crowd outside is huge when we arrive, it seems like no one is getting in. Standing on the sidewalk trying to get the attention of the bouncers is not fun, especially at 11pm and 35 degrees. Heavy cashmere is key.
I’m with a guy (now my husband) who says he has a friend that’s tight with the bouncer. We push to the front, wave him down, mention the friend and we are in! What a relief.
Being inside Xenon is surreal. Kool and the Gang Celebration blaring on and the dance floor is packed. It’s very hot, I need to check my mom’s cape. The coat check girl downstairs doesn’t seem to with it, but I have no choice. I take the ticket and hope for the best..
At 2am I return to the coatroom to get the cape back. Xenon stays open till 4, I’m leaving early!. The coatroom is total mayhem, overflowing with coats, will this woman be able to find mine? Stress levels rise while she takes forever looking...Ah there it is! I’m safe.
Now all I have to do is find a cab to take me home….

]]>This guide will walk you through why most cashmere today pills and losses its shape, while also highlighting the qualities you should look for when buying cashmere. I hope this guide will help you become cashmere smart and prevent you from getting another sweater that pills after one use.
How to avoid buying garments that are likely to pill and lose shape quickly:
Cashmere 101
Cashmere is woven from the underhairs of goats. The longer and finer under hairs are more desirable and prized by both heirloom weavers and international designers because they allow a heavy yet soft cashmere. These hairs allow weavers to tightly spin the hairs into yarn that creates a weighty fabric with uniform and soft surface. The fabric’s tight weave makes cashmere a naturally elastic and resilient fabric with unique properties such as lofty hand feel, draping capacity, durability, and warmth.
What about ply count? Many of us remember being told about ply as THE marker of good cashmere, which is part of spotting good cashmere but not the whole story. The ply count refers to the number of individual strands of yarn twisted in the opposite direction to create fabric. The number of strands spun together determine the ply. This process makes the yarn stronger, so a 2-ply yarn generally offers higher quality than is seen in a 1-ply yarn. However you can have a bulky 2-ply yarn or a skinny 4-ply yarn, depending on the quality of the cashmere hair. As a rule of thumb, ply count cannot tell you the whole story. Your feel and judgment of the weight is safer, no matter the ply. You can guarantee long lasting cashmere by buying heavier garments that have significant weight despite the ply.
What determines quality?
The finest cashmere comes from the neck region of the undercoat which has to be combed over one or two weeks. One goat typically yields 150 grams of cashmere a year, which is a small output compared to the rest of the fibers, thus explaining cashmere’s high price.
Over production of cashmere in the last couple decades has resulted in the creation of thinner and thinner cashmere garments that are woven with shorter and coarser fibers which cause pilling. To make the short and coarse fibers soft, garments are scrubbed over and over with metal brushes to make the fabric soft, and in turn extremely fragile. This cashmere becomes disposable and doesn’t last many seasons, and as a result more cashmere is needed to replace the old worn clothing. The best way to stem this cycle of fast fashion cashmere is to buy quality pieces from designers who directly source their fabrics.
Thank you for taking the time to read my guide! I hope you are now more informed on the cashmere qualities that distinguish great pieces from the rest, so that you next garment will last you a decade not a day.
]]>You may be asking yourself—how did Heidi manage to land such a talent? Serendipity. The story may seem hard to believe, but it’s true.
It all began when I was flying to my very first gem show in Tucson, Arizona. Stuck in the middle seat, I struck up a conversation with the women on either side of me. It turns out I was seated between a mother and daughter pair also headed to the gem show.
The mother was a buyer for Shreve and Co, one of California's oldest jewelers, and a past president of the Gem Society. Naturally we got talking about our love of jewelry, and the subject of making earrings came up.
During our conversation, I mentioned to them that I was in search of a goldsmith. The daughter to my right blurted out that they knew the best goldsmith in Northern California. The mother shot her a cold and evil look, and in that instant I knew I had stumbled upon something—an industry secret had just been let out of the bag. This cheap middle seat had turned into the most valuable place on the entire planet.
I quickly responded, asking the daughter if she would introduce me to this mystery man. The mother interrupted, and her short answer was no. She explained how he was too busy, and would never take on a new client. Being well mannered and polite, I let it be.
I saw them several times throughout the show, and was very friendly, as you can imagine. What happened on my flight home may have been blind luck or an angel watching out for me.
Guess who was in my row, on my return flight? None other than the mystery goldsmith. We had a great conversation the whole way back to San Francisco. After our chat on the flight, he was open to working with me. But, he made me swear not to give away his name or use him for personal projects. (Two promises I have kept to this day). And with that stroke of luck, I had found my new goldsmith.
You are the direct beneficiary of this good fortune. David is an incredible talent with classic taste. He leads a robust workshop full of talented artisans, who continuously turn out one beautiful piece after another. Over the last several years, we have developed a wonderful working relationship. Even though I may be his smallest client, I am his favorite.
]]>My earrings are uniquely designed with versatility in mind. Each set of studs and drops are interchangeable, giving you the ability to mix and match to your hearts delight!
The key to the system is a clever setting on the studs that I call a mousetrap. The mousetrap design allows the drops to be quickly connected to the studs and changed with ease. Additionally, the drops can also be worn alone when attached to a simple gold loop. The system allows you to wear each set in three different fashions, enabling countless variations. Brilliant! (See video demo here).
I created my earring system with a man I’ll call David—a famously talented goldsmith I was luckily introduced to a few years back. (See blog post on David here). We created this interchangeable feature to enable you to expand your collection, while also giving you more possible combinations with the pieces you already own. Looking elegant has never been this effortless.

Texture is the icing on the cake that adds interest and contrast to an outfit. Once you have color and length figured out, texture is the final element to create context for your ensemble so it all works together.
When you have a necklace that is chunky with a lot going on, it can easily be at odds with your outfit, even if the color palette is neutral and you’ve selected a complimentary neckline. If your outfit just feels off, thinking about the textures is a good place to start.
Striking a balance between textures is one of the things that makes an outfit look effortless and simply chic. Creating harmony and tension between textures allows your outfit to be more than just colors and shapes and gives it true depth.
Think about the dichotomy between soft and hard, polished and dull, flowing and structured. If everything is the same, what makes an outfit interesting? Textures.
Creating contrast with textures can make an otherwise simple outfit have a bit more depth and look more elegant. Many gemstone and pearl necklaces tend to be sleek, polished, and hard so adding opposites can elevate your look effortlessly.
Adding a bit of contrast with soft, flowing, textured fabrics add visual interest. Smaller burst of texture, like the above top, is an elegant way to incorporate a bit of contrast to an outfit that allows your personality to come through without feeling stuffy.
Pairing similar textures can also have an effect of creating elegance through cohesion. For bright, bold necklaces, matching textures can help to bring the accessory’s boldness down a notch and make it easier to wear.
If you’re more in love with a bohemian or casual look, adding natural fibers to your look can add breezy elegance that feels a bit more down to earth. Look towards necklaces made from materials like coral, wood, and textured and carved beads if you’re in love with linen, hemp, or bamboo clothing.
Textures can add both simplicity and complexity to an outfit, depending on how you decide to use it in your ensemble. Starting with either your clothing or your necklace and working to complete your look with the other usually makes it easier when it comes to textures.
Using this quick series of questions can help if you’re a bit lost when it comes to texture in your outfits:
As always, expressing your personal style is the most important part of wearing bold accessories. If you don’t care to think about texture, that’s your personal style making a statement! No matter what you decide to wear, it’ll always be 100% you.
]]>As a second part in our series of style guides to help you express your boldly classic personal style, we’re talking all about letting your accessories be the focal point of your outfit with neutrals.
Adding bold accessories to a neutral outfit makes a big statement without screaming for attention or being too over the top. There’s something decidedly chic about wearing neutrals, whether your outfit centers on blacks, whites, greys, or tans. Adding a bold, colorful necklace to your outfit can transform it from commonplace to something original without being overly eccentric.
Wearing bold accessories with neutrals can either help the necklace blend in, toning down a look, or create contrast to really show off your necklace and catch the eye.
Something as a small pop of color to a neutral outfit can create something classic and makes getting dressed simple. Instead of thinking about how to coordinate a number of different colors, you can rely on accessories to give your look a bit of color, not only making it easier to create stylish outfits but also giving your wardrobe a bit more versatility and flexibility.
The trick is to think about the undertones in the piece you’re wearing to find the neutral that will work best with the necklace. For our popular amethyst lariat, our customers love to wear it with neutral tans and whites for a casual summer look reminiscent of lazy summer days but it could easily be worn with blue-toned greys for a transitional outfit in spring or fall.
Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. There’s an old adage about taking off two things before you leave the house for classic style. If you can’t remove items to simplify, try removing color and allow your accessories to be the color focal point of your outfit.
When you wear mostly neutrals, the eyes are automatically drawn to the most colorful aspects of your outfit, allowing your bold accessories to draw in attention and complete your look.
Above all, dressing in colors you love and look great in is most important when it comes to dressing with style. No matter how you’d like to wear your accessories, creating a personal color story can help making wearing big statement necklaces all the more fun. Creating a neutral palette with your clothing and allowing your accessories to create the story is an easy way to make your personal style effortless, timeless, and sophisticated.
Give it a try and share your outfit with us on social media!
]]>Some of our customers are puzzled at first on how to style their new bold necklaces from the Heidi Carey collection so we wanted to provide some suggestions to try. We believe that style is personal and you can wear your accessories however you like! Hopefully these tips will increase your confidence and make wearing a statement piece easier.
We’re starting a series of posts about how to style bold statement necklaces from Heidi Carey to help you start dreaming up ways you can wear your new accessories and express your unique, classic style.
Wearing bold necklaces starts with figuring out what necklines tend to look best with big pieces. Bigger beads tend to hit your neckline in a different way than more delicate necklaces, making it a bit more of a challenge. However, it’s easy once you know some quick tricks!
Most necklaces in the Heidi Carey Collection tend to pair best with either high necklines that allow the necklace to hang over and act as a canvas for the piece or deep, low necklines for an alluring, dramatic look.
Inspired by the materials during the design process, you’ll usually find a few different necklace styles made of the same materials. Instead of thinking about the materials or colors when pairing with necklines, thinking about the shape can help clarify what look you’re trying to create.
The most versatile style in the collection, wrap necklaces can be worn with almost anything, including collared blouses, high necklines, low necklines, and rounded necklines. Don’t forget you can try different numbers of loops to find the right length for you.
Only slightly less versatile than a wrap necklace, long tassel necklaces wear well with a variety of necklines but it is important to think about what will be at your waist at the point where the tassel ends. Watch out for tops that in the middle of the tassel and opt for tops that end below the tassel.
Because of their length, short tassel necklaces more dramatic than their longer counterparts. High necklines with the necklace laid over the top or deep-v and low u-shaped necklines that allow the tassel to hang into decolletage tend to work well.
Big, bold pendants don’t need necklines quite as deep as short tassel necklaces but also work well with high necklines that act as a canvas for the necklace to sit on top of to give the pendant a background. They’re also great to wear peeking out of a collared shirt too.
Most multi-strand necklaces in the collection are short in length and work well with necklines that allow the strands to sit above the neckline or open necklines where the necklace peeks out.
Oversized bead necklaces are a fun statement making piece that wear well with a wide variety of necklines that allow the necklace to be the center of attention, including strapless, rounded, boatneck, strapped, and other similar styles.
No matter how you style your bold necklace, making your outfit a personal style statement is the most important thing to looking chic. If you’re uncomfortable wearing a deep v neckline that suits a short tassel necklace, for instance, you’ll likely look as uncomfortable as you feel.
Instead of feeling stuck by these recommendations take them for what they are—they’re just recommendations! The best way to figure out how to style your new accessories is by doing what you did when you were younger. Experiment, play dress up with your own wardrobe, and try new things. It might surprise you what you end up loving.

Hong Kong is overrun with luxury brands! It has been twenty years since my last visit; I don't remember Chanel and LV on every street corner. What a disappointment. I had visions of finding all kinds of great things I can't find at home.... not quite. The big lesson from my trip: the thrill of discovering new and unique things requires as much work in today's world as is it did 30 years ago.
My first fashion discovery was a 1976 Hermes scarf from Paris, purchased on a trip with my mother and father.
I was 12 years old.
I had wanted the scarf before I knew we were going to Europe. I'd seen similar styles on my mother and a few of her friends, it seemed rare, which made me want it all the more. Back then, you couldn't go to the local mall and purchase a Hermes scarf. In fact, you couldn't even travel into Manhattan and find a Hermes store. You needed to get on a Pan Am flight bound for Paris, which is what we did.
I slowly began a collecting scarves. I wanted to coordinate colors with my favorite ensembles and was hooked on the hunt. Any hopes of starting a real collection, however, hinged on another trip to Europe. In the early 80's I began to travel on my own, I scoured European cities for things unique and undiscovered. So much fun, and so easy to find great things to bring home and show your friends.
The possibility of discovery is still alive in Hong Kong we just needed to focus on the quiet streets away from the big brand stores jammed with label shoppers. I found shoe makers, bag designers and more from shops I had never heard of before. I will post photos of them all as they arrive in the mail.
My wardrobe today speaks volumes of my love for adventure and discovery. I am attracted to things stylish and unique - not so much labels.
I didn’t purchase any designer items on our trip. Not because I don't appreciate them, but because I would rather wear something that is new, and undiscovered. I dislike the "have to have it" mentality and believe that brands worn as a status symbol lose their value. If dressing up becomes about proving our worth, we lose the joy in self-expression.
My husband (the caveman) and I travel to places like Turkey, Vietnam, China, and Europe in search of tassels, beads, and silk to inspire the pieces you see in the Heidi Carey Collection.
My dream is not to become a big company or open hundreds of retail stores, but to craft beautiful pieces that will last a lifetime. I want to produce accessories known for their superior quality so that they will be cherished and worn with the knowledge that not everyone you know has the same one.
I plan to update the collection a few times a year, introducing limited inventory to be discovered and treasured. At events, you’ll find one-of-a-kind pieces that you’ll won’t see in my online store, so you can discover and wear them proudly -- just like that 1976 Hermes scarf.
I hope you love your Heidi Carey pieces and tell your friends, keeping the joy of discovery alive. After all, that's what makes creating your personal style fun.
Big Hugs,
Heidi
